OPENING SEQUENCES AND SETTING - CONCLUSION

Having looked at two opening sequences that present setting, I have noticed some similarities and differences. 

Both films introduce their settings in a way that is visually striking but they have some different techniques and purposes of this. 

1. Mood and tone 

Both films' settings create a sense of fear and unease. In 'Blade Runner', it is the combination of foggy skies, fire lit factories and unnerving music. In 'The Shining it is aerial shots of winding, isolated roads and eerie music that suggests an abandoned tone.

2. Omnipresent perspective 

Both films have a detached, god-like camera style. In 'Blade Runner' the aerial shots suggest someone may be watching over them which emphasises the idea that humans are insignificant in this environment. In 'The Shining' the camera follows Jack's car. This creates a sense of being watched or pursued. 

3. Foreshadowing 

Both foreshadow the key themes of the films.
