OPENING SEQUENCES AND ENIGMA - CONCLUSION

Having looked at two opening sequences that present enigma, I have noticed some similarities and differences. 

Both films introduce enigma and mystery in a way that helps the audience gain interest and invest in the storyline, including when there is non-linear storytelling, creating a 'puzzle'-like structure for the audience to try and solve whilst watching. 

Similarities: 

1. Introduction of unresolved situations 

Both openings immediately hook their audience by presenting a scene/situation that needs further explanation. This creates a direct interest from the audience and creates suspense and a desire to see how the events will unfold. 

2. Use of ambiguity

Both films introduce characters and scenery that is unfamiliar to the audience. In 'Pulp Fiction' it seems like a regular couple eating dinner, before they get up and begin to rob the diner. This creates a shock within the audience. Whereas in 'Inception', the character and the audience are both unfamiliar with the character and the setting creating a  sense of solidarity with the protagonist from the audience. 

Differences: 

1. Tone and atmosphere 

'Pulp Fiction' begins with a more comedic tone, with humour and casual dialogue suggesting there is a sense of relaxation and normality for the characters. However, 'Inception' creates a much more serious tone that evokes a sense of disorientation and urgency, making the audience want to understand quickly what's going on.
