OPENING SEQUENCES AND CHARACTERS - CONCLUSION

Having looked at two opening sequences that present character, I have noticed some similarities and differences. 

Both of the films, 'Dear John' and 'Uglies' convey the personalities and traits of the characters, giving the audience an insight into what is going to happen in the movie and an idea of the genre. They both introduce characters in different contexts, one to connect the audience to an emotional love story, and the other to help the audience to understand the harsh realities in this new dystopian world. 

These openings both illustrate how character introductions establish themes and ideas early on, encouraging the audience to emotionally invest in the plot. Whilst 'Dear John' leads with a personal struggle tied to his duties as a soldier, 'Uglies' criticises society and the government for allowing the world to turn into this dystopian hierarchy. It represents a societal struggle for the need to be socially attractive.
