OPENING SEQUENCES AND CHARACTERS - 'UGLIES'

The second film I am going to be analysing how they introduce characters and how this affects the audience is the film 'Uglies'. 'Uglies' is a Dystopian film. 

The opening sequence of the movie 'Uglies' introduces the protagonist (Tally Youngblood) as an almost 16 year old living in a dystopian society that is obsessed with physical beauty. The film quickly establishes Tally's yearning for the surgery that will turn her 'pretty', so she will be welcomed and accepted into the lively world she can be a part of once she is 'pretty'. It shows Tally's desperation for the surgery, showing the social pressure to conform, and that she is included in this. She doesn't want to stand out and do things differently, she just wants to fit in and conform. The introduction is impactful because it immediately draws the audience into her thoughts, showing her inner conflict and the unrealistic, oppressive beauty standards that people in the future may face. This is such a powerful opening sequence as it makes the audience relate to her character. They can already understand the harshness of beauty standards, and seeing it is something that Tally struggles with too, can make them relate to the character and make them invested in the story. The film also introduces the heavy contrasts between the uglies' harsh environment and the 'pretties' idealised, glamorous world, highlighting the divide, and the difference between the characters on either sides of the barriers. This introduces the characters because the audience can see what Tally is like, and the difference between her, and the 'pretties'.
