MY CHOSEN GENRE - ROMANTIC COMEDY

I have decided to create a film from the romantic comedy genre, also known as rom-com. It is a sub-genre of comedy and romance fiction. It focuses on lighthearted, humorous plot lines centred on romantic ideas, for example how true love is able to surpass all obstacles.

I have decided to do this genre because of multiple reasons:

1. Wide appeal

- Rom Coms are a universally loved genre and appeal to a very wide audience. The mix of humour and romance makes them relatable and entertaining.

2. Relatable themes

- they often tackle relatable themes like love, friendships and personal growth. It is a great way to connect with your audience on a very personal level.

3. Opportunity to mix genres

- romantic comedies often mix genres such as drama or coming-of-age which would give me the opportunity to explore other genres and the flexibility to add elements of other genres whilst staying within the romantic comedy genre.

4. Emotional range

- this genre offers a mix of emotions, can go from comedy to heartfelt moments. This means you can experiment with different emotional aspects and bring out emotions out of your audience.

Within choosing my genre there are some specific features I am going to be looking at. Genre can be defined in a number of different ways and each genre has specific conventions related to the following areas:

- narrative structure

- iconography/mise-en-scene

- cinematography

- character types

- editing

- sound - music/sound effects

- famous films/sub-genres/hybrids and franchises

- intended effect + typical themes

I am going to do a separate post on each one of these areas to help me incorporate these features into my opening sequence.
